A century before the Philippines came under American control, Americans were already travelling to Southeast Asia. This book examines American diplomats, writers and scientists, and chronicles how 19th-century Americans viewed and imagined Southeast Asia through cultural and political lenses, and how their writings contributed to the development of American Orientalism. It argues that as they came, they also brought with them a train of cultural assumptions and biases that were unmistakably American.
