Summary:
Since the 1990s, alongside formal intergovernmental regimes, informal governance structures—such as informal IGOs, transnational public-private alliances, and hidden networks within formal institutions—have become integral to world politics. This edited volume introduces a threefold typology: informality of institutions, within them, and around them. Through theoretical explorations, new datasets, and detailed case studies—from secret diplomatic agreements to climate-policy networks—the book reveals how informal mechanisms shape outcomes. The concluding chapter addresses normative implications and sets a research agenda for understanding informal global governance in the 21st century
